A Few Small Updates in Our Master Bathroom

Master Bathroom with pedestal tub and Sherwin William Sea Salt paint - www.goldenboysandme.com
It's always nice to have a few new items to put out after the Christmas decor is away. I found some new towels on a recent trip to Target that are by Opalhouse and I thought they'd tie in all the colors of our master bathroom perfectly.

The towels have ribbons of soft colors and patterns sewed onto them. I enjoy the details that Opalhouse puts into their items at the typical Target price point. Many of their items remind me of things I see at Anthropologie.

I think that January is all about things functioning well rather than just looking pretty. It feels good to get back to basics without all the excess. It's a month I always enjoy cleaning and organizing. This is a real- life look at out bathroom. The tiered stand holds our often used items out in the open. The baskets underneath the vanity hold my hair stung and overflow from the vanity. I keep my makeup in a tray that you can see on the lowest shelf of the built-in.

I still get asked for a source for our bathroom rug everyday and, unfortunately, I still don't have a source. I haven't even found anything similar enough to recommend. I will keep looking!

Master Bathroom Refresh

It has been six years since I first shared our Master Bathroom project that launched this entire blogging journey for me. Six years!! I still love our bathroom and consider it a great investment into both our home and also as a private space away from the craziness that inhabits the rest of our house, full of teenagers and dogs.

Quite suddenly, I decided that I needed a little more color in here. The walls are painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams and, other than a few accessories, that was it for the color in here. Six years ago, I wanted a mostly white, serene and spa-like feel, which I loved and enjoyed - and staunchly defended to many critics. But now I am in a season of life that just seems to NEED more color. Perhaps a mid-life home decor crisis? I mean, I am in my mid-40s - seems to have arrived right on time. Yikes, is my blue green vanity actually the equivalant of a middle aged guy's red corvette?? Side note, have you read Brene Brown's essay on midlife? Powerful and thought provoking, just like all of her other work.

Back to the bathroom, I hemmed and hawed for months about what color to paint the vanity. My first thought was grey, but that felt too neutral. Too safe. I started thinking about the colors of sea glass and how calming they are. I already had the Sea Salt paint on the walls, so what could I add to that? Many paint swatches later, I ended up choosing "Opal Silk" by Behr and with every stroke of the paint brush, I told myself I could always go back to white or grey. The vanity needed a fresh coat of paint anyway, right? That's how afraid I was to add color in here.

Here's the thing with adding color - once you start, the whole room's personality seems to come to life. I made a few changes to the accessories in the built-ins. Then, I found the rug at HomeGoods after I had painted the vanity and wasn't quite sure if the new vanity color went well enough with the paint color on the walls. It felt serendipitous how the addition of the rug brought all the colors together.
So, six years later, besides adding color, what else would I change about this bathroom? Not much. I think a lot of the design choices in here will stand the test of time. I love the marble countertop (I lamented so greatly over that choice and it has held up remarkably well), the faucet choices and especially the built-ins. I am so glad we put the extra effort into that added charm.
And what would I change? The tub is acrylic and was a budget friendly option, but if I had to do it over again, I would have opted for cast iron. I am a devoted bath-taker and the acrylic definitely has a cheaper, less sturdy feel and doesn't hold heat as well as cast iron. I would prefer a higher end shower at this point, but all in all, I still feel satisfied with how far we spread our $7,000 investment in here.
Whenever I catch a peak of the vanity from our bedroom, it makes me smile. I feel like it has breathed new life into one of my very favorite spots in my home.

Christmas Master Bathroom and a Fun Advent Calendar

Christmas decor in master bathroom with built ins, bead board and Sherwin Williams sea salt paint
Hello friends! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday. I always enjoy Black Friday because it is a day to stay home in my jammies, eat leftovers and search for good deals online. No actual stores for me on this crazy shopping day. Today, I am beginning to share some of my Christmas decor. I am excited to be participating in Jennifer Rizzo's Holiday Housewalk again, but that isn't until next week and I have so much to share that I will be sharing a few rooms earlier and then the bulk of our home in the housewalk. Let's begin in the bathroom, shall we?

Ideas For Adding Vintage Charm In The Bathroom

Hello friends and Happy Friday, Farmhouse Friday that is!  It is the 4th Friday of the month which means I am teaming up with some of talented bloggers to share our ideas and love of farmhouse style.  Be sure to check out their inspiration at the end of this post.  Today's topic is "floral accents" and I have to admit that I don't have much floral anything in our home other than the fresh flowers I buy at Trader Joe's each week.  Living in a house full of boys, our master bathroom has been the one space in our home that I allow myself to make a bit more feminine and pretty (apologies to my husband, Billy!). This DIY bathroom is now 3 years old and I still love this room, but I thought it would be fun to make a few small changes.  Today I am going to share a bit about my crazy thought process and shopping habits when I set out to refresh a room.

Winter Reads, A New Magazine Feature & An Update

Hello!  One of my favorite things about this time of year is how the pace of life slows down and leaves plenty of time for one of my favorite things to do- read.  Today I am sharing a couple of the standout books I have read in the last few months.

Bathroom Dreaming with Hometalk

Our master bathroom is the most calming and soothing place in our entire house.  Escaping up there to take a bath in the evening is my reward for getting through another crazy day,  especially during the busy holiday season.  My friends at Hometalk recently asked me to curate a board of spa-like bathrooms for them and I jumped at the opportunity.  It seems to me that simply looking at pictures of dreamy bathrooms is about as soothing as taking a bath itself.  So I picked out 15 of my favorite bathrooms on Hometalk and created a board.  You can find it here.

In addition to soothing color schemes, all of these bathrooms take storage into account.  Let's face it, a bathroom needs to be as functional as it is pleasing to the eye.   From my board, you can click through to see bigger pictures and more information about all of these bathrooms.  I am currently planning another bathroom reno in the new year.  My kids' bathroom is the only room in our house that we haven't tackled yet and it is time.  There are some great ideas to be found on Hometalk and I will definitely be heading there to find ideas for our new project.

Have you been to Hometalk yet?  If you haven't, you should definitely check it out.   It is a warm and welcoming place to plan your next project or to just be inspired.

First Day of School Ikea Haul

Ikea Haul - www.goldenboysandme.com
Hello and Happy Monday!  I am so happy to be back to a routine around here now that school has started.  So far, everyone is happy with their teachers so we are off to a good start to the school year.  Phew!  Here is my youngest on the first day.  Confession:  I took this picture after school.  Don't judge, he is our third kid after all :)

Keepin' it real in our master bath

We "may" have been getting a bit lazy about keeping things in their place in our master bath.  You know all those things that don't appear in a magazine photo shoot but are necessary items in an actual bathroom?  Like toothbrushes, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc.  They were collecting all over the top of our countertop and it was not pretty.  I headed to HomeGoods in search of some way to keep everything organized and yet still easily accessible.  I found this 2 tiered stand in the kitchen aisle and I thought it could work.

Our Bathroom in Print (Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath Makeovers)

**To read lots more about our master bathroom (including sources), check out this post.

Yesterday, my youngest guys and I were browsing through Target when we came to the magazine aisle.  This was after spending a half hour in the video game, movie, and books aisle "just looking". These last few weeks of summer are wearing me down...no more vacations and a husband who is working every. single. day for the rest of the month.  I spotted the new issue of the magazine that did a photo shoot at our home last October. Secretly, I don't think I really believed the article would ever actually be published.  I opened it to the bathroom section and there I saw the words "it's full of boys" and I knew that those words meant us!
My little guy was so proud of his mama and that his been my favorite moment of this whole experience :)  Middle boy mentioned that it was very fitting for me to see our house in a magazine at Target since I spend so much time there it is like my second home.  He's a funny one.  When I first shared pictures of our master bath last year on my personal scrapbook of a "blog", I never imagined the road that would lead me down.  A feature of our master bathroom can be found in the Fall/Winter issue of Kitchen and Bath Makeovers by Better Homes and Gardens, on newsstands now.  There is also a digital edition available here.
Better Homes and Garden Kitchen and Bath Makeovers Fall/Winter 2014
It seems surreal to see a space that I use everyday all prettied up by a stylist and photographed by a talented professional.  It was exciting to get to read what the writer, Jorge S. Arango, had to say about us and our DIY bathroom.  I felt like he really "got" our family.  It was a thrill to watch the photographer, John Bessler, work.  Best of all, Marie McCartan, the magazine editor, said that I have "savvy shopping skills" in her editor's note, which really is just affirmation to my husband that he should just trust my shopping habit, right? :)

For other bloggers out there, if you ever have an opportunity to have a magazine come to your house for a feature, I highly recommend it.  The guys that came to my house were down to earth (and funny!) and gave us a little bit of insight into how the magazine world works with their stories.  It was an experience we will never forget.

Kitchen and Bath Makeovers Magazine Photo Shoot!!

I still can't believe this really happened.  On Wednesday, Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath Makeovers magazine came to do a photo shoot for a feature on our DIY Master Bathroom.

For weeks before, I was a nervous wreck.  A professional stylist and photographer coming to our humble home??  It didn't seem possible!  We rushed to complete our Master Bedroom redo because I couldn't imagine bringing those professionals upstairs to that 80s shag carpet.  I kept expecting to get a call saying they were sorry for the mistake, wrong blog, nope, not coming to your house.  We deep cleaned every room in our home.  3 kids and 2 dogs make messes.  I kept telling myself it needed the cleaning anyway, so even if they didn't show up, it was worth it.  But the day arrived and they actually came.

We scrubbed and polished every inch of our bathroom.  It looked naked the morning they arrived.  All of our accessories were put away.  I was excited to see what a professional stylist would do with this space...
