Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are just about my favorite way to decorate a space.  I like them to look collected and to represent the people who live within the walls.

The first gallery wall I ever put together in our home was in our family room.  We had a big open wall and began with a mantle shelf from Pottery Barn and began building around it.  The shelf was hung using anchors, but everything else was hung using Command adhesive so I could switch things out when I felt like it.  The shelf worked well because it was easy to rotate photos and art around.

We love books so I picked up the "librairie" sign at Target a few years back.  The antlers are a nod to our love of everything to do with the Adirondack Mountains, as is the picture of the pine trees.  The are 5 people in our family so I stained a wooden number 5 that I purchased at Michaels.  Mixed in with these things are some of our favorite pictures displayed in frames that coordinate but do not match.
I must admit that I am not at all exact about hanging things so I won't be writing a tutorial about that.  I just eyeball everything and stick it up with the Command strips. I then step back and adjust things as needed.   Definitely not the best method, but it is what works for me.  I recently disassembled the gallery wall you see above because I rearranged the family room and it no longer worked in our space.  Some of the pieces ended up in our stairway gallery wall that leads up to the bedrooms.

Some of the other pieces ended up on a smaller wall in our family room.

My boy's bedrooms also have gallery walls that they add to whenever the mood strikes them.  I bite my tongue and let them do it because they are their rooms and I think it is important to let them express themselves.  This picture was taken when my 2 younger boys shared a room, before my middle guy added his own posters.

They have since separated into their own rooms and my younger guy wanted his own gallery wall.  I have never shown pictures of his room on the blog before because we never quite finished the base molding.  It's been a year now.  Must get that back on the to-do list.

I also created a gallery wall at Christmastime in our entryway.  Again, thanks to Command adhesive, I was able to take it down at the end of the season with no wall damage.

Finally, in our very small powder room off our mudroom, I added a few things together to give the room some interest.  I love using wall baskets because they are decorative and functional.

I am currently working on yet another wall that I hope to share soon.  I have set up a corner "office" space in our family room and I am collecting things to put there.  Are you a fan of gallery walls, too?  I have a pinterest board that is dedicated just to them if you'd like to follow along.

  1. You have some beautiful gallery walls. I just have one in my back hall but plan on adding one in the upstairs hallway. I had planned one for my 10 year old's room but then he hung a Minecraft poster and I decided to just leave it.. Whatever makes him happy! I have to check out those Command strips! I end up with too many mistake holes in my walls!
