Vermont Fall Guide

Traveling the back roads of Vermont during fall is one of our very favorite things to do. Over the years, we have explored more and more of the state from our home base at our cabin in the Adirondack Mountains just across Lake Champlain.

I have learned so much from photographers who share their knowledge and locations so generously and so I hope this will serve in paying that forward in some way. I will add a list of the accounts I have learned  from at the bottom of this post. I am not a "real" photographer by any means. I just really enjoy taking pictures and my work as a content creator has created a need for good pictures.

My biggest piece of advice to anyone spending time in Vermont is to get off the main roads and explore. We usually start with a general location in mind and explore from there. Be ready to be amazed around the winding dirt roads. We stay away from places like Stowe and Woodstock during fall. We have visited those spots and taken the same pics shared all over social media but for us the magic doesn't live there. The true magic is in the quieter moments (again - this is just our preference).  If you love the hustle and bustle, those are the places for you. Just be mindful that you are visiting someone's home that is inundated with tourists and try to be respectful. Some places like Jenne Farm in Reading and Sleepy Hollow Farm in Pomfret are now closed off during peak season so be aware of that too.

We drive around A LOT. At times, we will stay to watch the sunset and then have a 3 hour drive home in the dark. Thankfully Billy loves to drive and our dog Dax is happy to be along for the drive. The prettiest hours are for sure at dawn and dusk but we explore all day because there is only so much time to get out there before stick season arrives.

A few of our favorite spots in no particular order. I am naming towns only because half the fun is figuring out where exactly they are. I will add to this as we find new ones each year.

Businesses featured in my 2025 Vermont reel:

Bridgeside Books - Charming bookstore in Waterbury, Vermont

Yates Family Orchard in Hinesburg, Vermont
The BEST apple cider donut served warm (freshly fried) with a maple cremee and apple picking. A delightful must stop - we've gone twice this year!

At the end of my 2025 reel on Instagram I shared that we saw 2 moose on the side of the road somewhere in Vermont. I won't share exactly where it was but it was an amazing moment of connection with a wild animal that we will never forget. And it re-enforced our practice of "just driving around" because you never know what you'll find next!

A few of my favorite fall follows:

Jack Daryl Photography  - all around great follow

Dave Long - Photographer who publishes guides to photographing various areas around New England

Francois de Melogue - Vermont photographer

Travel Like a Local Vermont - I have learned about so so many places to visit and she's a Vermont realtor

Happy Exploring!
