Our New Sofa {Birch Lane Montgomery Slipcovered Sofa}

I had planned to wait until after the holidays to post my review of our new sofa, but a few people have asked if I could give my opinion sooner.  So here it is!  It is the Montgomery Slipcovered Sofa from Birch Lane.  We absolutely love it.  It is always a bit scary to order a big ticket item like a sofa without actually sitting on it.  I have learned that the most important thing to do when ordering online is research.  I read all of the reviews, ordered fabric swatches ahead of time and measured.  I also exchanged a few e-mails with Birch Lane gathering more information regarding care of the fabric choices.  Then I placed the order and crossed my fingers.

I am right in the middle of decorating this room for Christmas so you will get a few peeks of that decor too.  I am so happy that this sofa arrived in time for the holidays.  I ordered it on October 16 and it arrived on November 10.   I placed the order on their website and received tracking information so I could keep up with the progress of my order.  Once it shipped, a local shipping company called to schedule delivery.  It arrived first thing in the morning on the day of delivery.

It is incredibly comfortable.  The down cushions are so plush.  I think that is the main thing I notice after living with Ikea stuff for a while (I still love Ikea sofas!).  The cushions hold their shape very well and don't need to be adjusted as often as our old sofa.  Here she is without all of my throw pillows so you can get a good look.

The slipcovers are a necessity for us, but I do like the casual style they add to the sofa.  The Montgomery is also available in an upholstered style if you prefer a cleaner look (and don't have kids and pets like us).
This isn't a sponsored post and I wasn't compensated in any way for this review.  I ordered and paid for this sofa.  Just wanted to be clear about that ;)

The Montgomery has a higher back than our old sofa and I like how it divides our space visually.  I also like that it has a medium sized footprint.  There are so many huge sofas out there now and my room just can't handle anything that big.  Definitely get out a tape measure before you order anything online. I can't stress that enough.

I had ordered swatches and I highly recommend you do that too.  I ended up choosing a fabric that wasn't even in my top 3 choices after looking online.  It is important to see it in your own space and, even more importantly, to feel it.

I knew that I wanted a lighter neutral, but not white.  I was leaning towards the bottom middle swatch (a cream twill fabric) but ended up going with the top left swatch.  It is the Bryant Oatmeal Textured Slub fabric.  It is soft to the touch and the texture gives it a nice appearance.

Overall, I think this sofa was the right choice for us and I would recommend it.

  1. It is worrying how excited I was for this post. Your choice of sofa is beautiful, it's my dream!
I live in the UK and it is so hard to find well made sofas with slipcovers! I too have kids and pets and being able to wash the covers is a must in my house. Sadly IKEA is pretty much my only option. I am debating about the Stocksund, that you mentioned before, but I just don't know how well it will last with a 7 year old and a 3 year old bouncing on it! Haha! x

    1. Oh, I am so glad to know you were excited for this post :) I do think the Stocksund is a great choice too, especially for the price. It has a great look and is super comfy. And I liked the fabric choices. I strongly considered it. My boys are older so I worried about big teenage boys and how rough they are on furniture. The Montgomery feels very sturdy.

  6. The sofa is beautiful, Courtney, there are so many things I love about it. The little bit of the legs showing, the plump cushions, the color. I never would have known you picked the top left swatch for your fabric, the sofa looks much lighter but that's why it's so important to get the swatches. I've always wondered about Birchlane so it's great to hear that you had a good experience. Can you tell me what sort of warranty they offered?

I'm looking forward to seeing your Christmas decor!! :)

  8. Love your style! I've had my eye on this sofa and can't decide to go slipcovered or not, as they are spot clean only. Have you attempted to wash yours in the machine at all?

    1. Thank you!! I haven't needed to clean it yet. My son did get a small spot of marker on it and after I freaked out, I was able to spot clean it and you can't see a mark at all, thankfully. When it does need to be washed, I plan to take it to the dry cleaner. Hopefully that won't be anytime soon!

  9. Hello Courtney, I love your new slipcovered sofa, I'm loving it so much that I ordered fabric swatches from Birch Lane and they arrived today!!!! We are set on the Montgomery now we need to choose which fabric. I have a question for you.....you went with the Bryant Texured Slub Oatmeal? The pics you have seem to show it much lighter than the sample I received. Does it change color in different lighting? My thoughts were to go with a lighter fabric like the Tillery Vanilla or the Griffin Twill Cream, but you's looks so different in your pictures, much lighter. Thanks for your help......this is a big decision. Laura

  10. Hi Laura,

I think you will be very happy with this sofa. I would say to definitely judge by how the swatches look in your space. Our room has a lot of natural light so that is probably why it is appearing a bit lighter in my pictures. In person, it is a lighter oatmeal color. I wanted to avoid the lightest colors because of my busy household. It has been holding up remarkably well with my kids and dogs! Good luck with your choice.

  11. I order products often from birch lane(which is owned by wayfair, joss&main, all modern companies) for my vacation rental clients. They have great products that are better made (in my opinion) than the highly raved pottery barn. They have great warranties and MANY OF THE FABRICS ARE MACHINE WASHABLE. just look on the back of the swatches at the cleaning codes. Anything with SW or W can be cleaned this way. The product descriptions only show cleaning options for the model pic fabric. Heads up for all of you crushing and wanting to order any birch lane product. Here is the trick go to joss&main or wayfair daily sales, the first is better now that they offer free shipping. These products are on there all the time for much cheaper!!! I just purchased the newton grande sleeper chair (pulls out to twin bed) for $381 total!!! Birch lane sells this for $1100 on sale, now that's savings. These auction sites change the names of furniture (as they can in the furniture world) so if your not familiar with their lines you may need to do a Google image search to verify manufacturer. But I buy most all my products here and am familiar enough with the furniture lines to know what's junk and quality. I get alot of paula dean home, hooker, Stanley, Lexington, and even pottery barn on here too. The furniture market (like travel) is about 200% markup. Those who live in southeast recommend goods in high point who deliver nationwide, custom order anything and still no one local will be able to touch by several hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Accidently ran across this site trying to do an image search for a piece I'm not familiar with and thought I'd chime in. In case it helps anyone. Happy shopping! Oh the new denim fabric is machine washable as well for those blue lovers super soft as are all tillery

Oh and you can buy a furniture warranty if worried about spills on any furniture you purchase if dinner in great two weeks. I have 3 small kids and ordered a nearly white paula Deen sectional 2 years ago. I purchased a 7 yr warranty for 200 which was worth it on an expensive item without a slipcover. If my kids rub ketchup on it daily I can call and someone will come out and clean every single day for 7 years. If they can't remove the stain they will replace the couch this goes for legs getting scratched the whole thing is covered just fyi. Once your or of the disposal furniture phase is a must!

Ands girl from UK is lucky! I have wayfair send me uk products all the time! They don't have this particle board standard like we do all solid wood furniture very inexpensive!

  14. Hi, I am contemplating buying a sofa from Birch Lane and came across your post. I was wondering how, 8 months later, your sofa is holding up. Do you still like it? Has the fabric begun to pill? Would you still recommend the sofa and fabric you chose? Thanks!

    1. I love this sofa. It is holding up very well. It hasn't pilled at all, still looks great and I would still recommend it. Hope that helps!

  15. Wonderful sofa! I have 3 Birch Lane sofas! Love them all. I've also been wondering if the covers are replaceable. Mine are holding up, but I went with charcoal on my large one...was hoping to lighten it up for a change. Do you know if we can order replacement covers?

  16. Hello, Love your sofa! I am interested in purchasing a Birch Lane sofa with the same Bryant Textured Slub fabric also in oatmeal. Can you tell me what fabric cleaning code it is? Also, I know you mentioned you have spot cleaned it--what cleaning product did you use? Thank you!

  17. Hi, I'm trying to make a decision on this sofa color for the Fairchild slipcovered sofa...and it's narrowed down to the Bailey linen papyrus or this Bryant oatmeal slub. Originally I wanted tillers vanilla for a nice cream look. anyway, can you confirm that it's Bryant because it looks so much lighter than my swatches here... your blog is the only one I can find with pics for comparison. Hope you don't mind me asking. Also, can you tell me how the fabric is holding up after months of wear. I've had bad luck with polyester pilling and I'm so worried about that happening again! thank you! -Desiree dcarroll779@gmail.com

  18. Thanks for the your post! I am thinking about this sofa also. I wanted to find a slip cover sofa and the style of this one is easy to lay down on. So you find that the slip cover washes well and is not too hard to put back on?

    Thanks

  20. I too am wondering how the sofa is holding up. Also, would you please post the fabric type you got (I know you posted the name, but I cannot find which fabric type it is). Is it a poly blend, cotton, cotton blend, etc.? Thanks!

  21. Hi Courtney, I'm curious as to how well the sofa you purchased from Birch and Lane is holding up as of now. Also is the sofa heavy solid furniture or light movable furniture? I'm wanting something that is going to hold up well to lots of traffic. Thanks in advance!
