Winter Family Room - A New Furniture Arrangement

After we packed away all of the holiday stuff, I was craving a change in our family room for winter. We spend the most time in this space during the winter months and I like it to function as well for as family as possible. I thought about the different ways we use this room and decided to break it up into sections. The three main activities we enjoy at this time of year are tv watching, playing games/puzzles and reading by the fire.

I knew that I wanted to separate the wall unit into three separate pieces because that is an easy way to change the whole feel of the room. We put the two side pieces together to give them more of a bookshelf feel.

I enjoy reading in front of the fire at this time of year, so this arrangement works perfectly. The plaid armchairs by the fireplace are the sweet spot in the room for sure. I kept the snowshoes up on the mantel for winter and kept things simple. The jute rug under the chairs is a new addition that we picked up at Ikea a couple of weeks back. I love how much texture and warmth it adds to this space.

We moved the big tv part of the wall unit to our planked wall and moved most of our gallery wall items to where the tv used to be.

I decided to leave the red and black buffalo check pillow covers that I had out for Christmas on the sofa pillows for a few more weeks.

I will share more about the nook area I created in this corner of the family room in a future post.

This arrangement allows for our gallery wall to be more spread out. I enjoy having the Pottery Barn mantel shelf as a centerpiece because it makes it easy to change up the pictures on the ledge. That way I can change the pictures with the seasons.

    1. Thanks Lisa. Yes, it is a lot, I agree. I will probably edit it down a bit over time, but that's the fun in decorating for me. Have a great day!

  5. Dax has it right and agrees you did a great job on moving the furniture to make the room more cozy. Looks great Courtney. That is one thing I miss in this new place is a fireplace. Love the comfy and warm feeling a fireplace gives to the room. Looks great. Have a great new week ahead.

    1. Thank you, Kris. We use our fireplace every day in the winter. But your home is so warm and inviting, even without a fireplace. Have a great week!

  6. The room looks beautiful Courtney! I know you made the sign with the mountain quote by Tyler Knott Gregson. Did you ever provide a tutorial? I tried to look back in your archives but was not successful. I recently redid my son's room with an Adirondack theme and something like that would be perfect. We also vacation upstate and love the Lake Placid area. I'm from waayyy out on Long Island....very close to the Pottery Barn Outlet you said you drove to!!

    1. Hi Beth! Thanks for leaving a comment today. I am itching to get back to your Pottery Barn Outlet. I so wish we had one closer. Although it would probably be dangerous for me. I didn't do a tutorial for the Tyler sign, but I used the same method to make it as I did the Baking Co sign in our kitchen (I did write a tutorial for that). Here is the link to that:

    1. Hi Kristin! Thank you. The paisley pillow cover was from Pottery Barn a couple of years back. I think the name of the pattern was called Colette. Maybe try eBay? I have had good luck finding discontinued items from Pottery Barn there.

  8. I love this room and your idea of creating three spaces. I never thought of that. I'm going to see if I can apply that to my family room or den.

I like your mountain theme...this is such a cozy room with the throws and pillows yet your solids keep it very soft. Family pictures are so sweet.

    Thanks for the inspiration, Courtney!

  9. First time commenting! I found your blog last week and have been reading/looking at all the loveliness since then. I love that you use COLOR. So rare these days, yet many of us are craving it. I have a couple of questions for you that I didn't see answered anywhere--where do you get your fantastic paint by numbers and your collection of gorgeous throws? Also, the striped IKEA rug--does it lay flat? Are you pleased with the purchase? It would work in our family room, but sometimes thinner rugs like that have issues with my kids and pets. Thank you so much and keep blogging!

    1. Hi Lisa! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your first comment. I so appreciate it! Yes, I love color and I am glad there are others who still also do. I purchased my paint by numbers from a variety of places, including yard sales, ebay and I even painted a couple. I love the colors and patterns of the Ikea rug, but it did move all over the floor and wrinkled up. It drove me crazy! I solved that by layering it on top of an indoor/outdoor rug that I purchased from Lowes. Now I love it. So I would recommend it, but only layered on another rug. I like the texture the combo of the two rugs adds to the room. Hope that helps and I hope you'll keep visiting my blog.
