Wire Basket Hanging Light

Happy Veteran's Day!   I hope your week is off to a great start!  Today, I am sharing a small project.  I added a quirky & fun new light to my "office" this week.  My office space is actually just a corner of our family room.  Especially when I am working alone in the fairly large room, I like to have the option to turn off the recessed lights overhead and still have enough light at my desk.  I have been on the lookout for a pendant style light.  But one with some personality.  And one that could easily be moved because I am forever changing things.

I should back up and tell you first about how excited I was to find out that there is now a Hobby Lobby in northern NJ.  Can you believe we lived for years without either a Hobby Lobby OR World Market?  And now we have both within a reasonable driving distance.  Life changing!  So I was wandering around Hobby Lobby-by myself-which is pretty much as good as it gets.  And I found a hanging light kit for cheap.  And then I could use the 40% off coupon too.  They had some wire pendant shades meant to go with the lamp kit that were cute.  But I was looking for something with a bit more interest.

I found this wire basket in the aisle with all the storage baskets and metal shelving, etc.  I turned it over and saw that it had a hole almost big enough for the light kit to make it through and I knew with a bit of Billy's help we could make it work.

He was able to make the hole a bit bigger with some wire cutters and we were good to go.  We just threaded the wire through the hole and hung the light using the hook that came with the hanging light kit.  You can see the hook in the picture below.  Then I used some Command Adhesive hooks to keep the wire close to the molding along the side of the window and we plugged it in.

We added an Edison bulb because every light is more interesting with an old fashioned bulb.

We finished planking this wall in our family room and painted it white and I love it.  More than I even imagined I would.  I will be posting about that project really soon!

And then my oldest son came home and said, "Hey, Mom made a light out of a garbage can today.  Cool."  And I thought-hmmm-maybe it was actually meant to be a garbage can.  And now I am on the hunt for some more interesting things I can use to turn into lights :)

  3. I love this idea..very cool! I know that I seeked out a Hobby Lobby. I found one in South Plainfield, NJ and now there is one in Totowa too. I also love Kirklands which is now out on Route 23. The Hobby Lobby in Totowa is like only 15-20 minute ride. If there was one in Bergen County I'd be broke!

    1. Thank you! I didn't know there was a Kirklands on 23! I used to go to one at the Palisades Center but it closed now. So glad you let me know that. I went to the Hobby Lobby in Totowa.
