Master Bedroom Planning

We have been planning/dreaming of what to do in our Master Bedroom since we bought this house 6 years ago.  We love that our master bedroom and bathroom are completely set apart from the rest of the house.  It feels like an escape when we get up there.  However, because it is so separated from the rest of the house, we have left it neglected for way too long.   Now that the bathroom is done (click here to see our new master bathroom!), it is time to move on to the bedroom.  Finally!

This is what it looks like now.  Since we moved in, we have basically added our furniture, hung a ceiling fan, and haphazardly hung a few pictures.  We plan on keeping our bed (but painting the frame) and dressers (they are pine and high quality construction and I still love them)...

Like the rest of our house, we hope to add lots of cottage charm to this room.  We think the plank accent wall will do just that.  The best part of the room is its size.  My least favorite part is the carpet...yuck!   There is a sitting area that the master bath is now off of and we plan to build in a window seat and add some built in bookshelves (hacking some Ikea Billy bookcases, of course!).  I would like to have the bookshelves wrap around that left corner and go to the single window.  We'll see how that works out.  That old white sofa in the picture below will be heading to the basement.

Finally, here are some of my favorite inspiration pictures from my Master Bedroom Pinterest board.

The Lettered Cottage happened to have the same headboard as us, purchased from JC Penney's years ago.  They painted theirs with bronze spray paint and I love how it turned out, so we are considering painting ours too.  I just love their style, and they have a plank wall also.

Here is an inspiration photo for our sitting area from BHG.  I love the window seat with bookshelves.

More window seat inspiration (and I love the buffalo check and the lighting built in to the side!)

And some plank wall inspiration...

We will be waiting until the kids are back in school in September to tackle this project, but in the meantime, the planning is underway.  We are still undecided about flooring.  Help me, please!  Do you prefer hardwood flooring or carpeting in your bedroom?

  1. The size of your bedroom is great. We have wood floors in our bedroom but I would love carpet simply because vacuuming would be a whole lot easier than sweeping and mopping. And since we are sleeping in there I have to clean the floors more often since easy breathing makes for a better nights sleep. :)

    1. Thanks, Nancy. I have wood floors throughout the whole house, but I have never had them in a master bedroom. My husband wants carpet. I think wood might look better, but I am leaning more towards carpet and your points about keeping it clean are very good ones. Thanks so much for your input!

  2. Hi Courtney,
We have hardwoods in our bedroom, too, but I really miss the carpet. It made it seem so much more like a retreat with the soft carpet. We have hardwoods throughout our house and having it in the bedroom would have made the bedroom just seem special.

    1. Thanks, Susan! Excellent point about the carpeting making the master feel more "special". A softer retreat is exactly what I am hoping for!! Thank you so much for your input.

  3. Hi! I have painted wood floors (which i, not so smartly, painted white) So they can be a hassle, but I was going for the cottage feel..I'm in a decor rut tho- we've been in our room for about 2 years now and everything is white (walls, floors, furniture) and sometimes I feel it's less open/airy and more plain. idk, maybe a few more years will pass before I finally get it Just right lol Good luck!

    1. Hi Nora! Your painted hardwoods sound great, and very cottage-y. I think you can never go wrong with all white. You can always bring in color with accessories and a rug. Thanks so much for your input!

  4. Your bedroom has great bones; the inspiration pics are lovely and I think you could totally achieve in your space.
I like that you are taking your time with it. It will only benefit you in the end. Hopefully you will score a sale or two for the bigger ticket things you want to get done.
As for carpet or hardwood....hardwood all the way baby!!
Good luck with the Reno and enjoy the process.

    1. Hi Cheryl! I agree that it is best to take your time when planning a project. It is not always easy because I usually get excited and want to jump right into it, but I've learned through the years it is better to take a step back and think about it. Thanks for your input!!
