Touches of Spring in the Mudroom

Just the other day I gave our mudroom a good spring cleaning.  I moved all of our heavy winter coats and boots to the front hall closet and went through all of the mudroom baskets.  You would be surprised at the miscellaneous stuff I find crammed into those baskets.  No, actually those of you with kids wouldn't be surprised at all ;)

We start out the winter with a basket for each person in the family to keep their winter gear (hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) in.  The dogs get a basket too.  But sometime after Christmas, our system always begins to fall apart.

And then, before you know it, there are book bags, shoes and winter gear spilling out of the baskets and all over the bench.  I am glad to have the mudroom where everything stays pretty much contained, but I just want to be honest in that it doesn't usually look like these pictures.  Sometimes it is hard to see the floor.

Sometimes, on our house's messy days, I look at the pictures on this blog just to remember that it can be neat again.  As you can see from how dirty they are, my Hunter boots are not just a blog prop.  I wear them all year long to work outside and walk in the woods.

Our (very small) powder room is just off of the mudroom.  I thought I would share this picture just to give a perspective on where everything is.  If you are new here, I shared how we created this mudroom from Ikea bookcases in this post.

I will be posting a lot more Spring pictures this week so I hope you will stop by again.

  1. Your mudroom is so colorful and so springy! Let's hope now that you put away those coats, there won't be any more cold days! I am so ready for spring even though we will miss skiing...there's always next year! Love the flowers in the boots too!

    1. Oh, let's hope we don't need those coats anymore!! I am afraid that after this cold weekend, the mudroom is full of coats again. Hopefully next time I put them away will be for good.

  3. It looks so beautiful Courtney. It's nice to know that you too have messy days. I love to reorganize and have it look tidy even if only for a few minutes!

    1. LOL Jeanette. We have mostly messy days ;) And I agree, it is worth it for the short amount of time it stays clean. I should go clean it right now, actually. We are having guests for Easter and it is a mess in there. Have a great week!

    1. Hi Stephanie,
Thanks! The bag is from Target (purchased a couple of weeks ago) and the scarf is from Old Navy last spring. Hope that helps!

  5. Courtney, I am so envious of your mud room. I love the sound of that. I have a back porch that is waiting to be a mud room, but after 30 years, do you think it is losing hope?..Happy Tuesday..Judy

    1. LOL, Judy! Never lose hope. My "mudroom" isn't large at all, it is really a small corner of our family room. Some of the big mudrooms I see on blogs are so dreamy.

  6. I love your home and décor style. I was wondering how you tie different styles & color palettes together? You have a split level and so do I. My living room is open to dining & kitchen area and you can see my family room from the living room.

I see lots of blue in your home with small pops of red, but I also see earthy fall colors in your family room, white and black in the living room & I am loving the new blue & white in the master. Now I see some green in the mudroom. (you had awesome green curtains in your dining area at one time). Whenever I try to combine colors/patterns, it looks…bad. I have waverly floral red curtains in my kitchen right now & I spied this predominantly blue table cloth, but when I put it on the table, it looks like a sore thumb. How do you do it?

    1. Hi Michelle,
I love color and I use it freely all across my home, but I definitely change the color palette with the seasons. I am not a professional designer, I just switch things around until I find what looks good to me. I often put something together, and realize it just doesn't work and something needs to change. For example, I added some pastels to my family room for spring (I will be sharing that on Friday), but they definitely weren't working with the reds in the room, so I removed the reds for the season, including one of my rugs. I enjoy switching things up. I store everything in my basement. So my advice is, don't be afraid to play around with your decor. I often don't get it "right" on the first try either. Just keep trying new combinations until you find something that is pleasing to YOU. It is your home and as long as you are happy with the look of things, that is all that matters :). I think you just gave me an idea for a blog post so thank you!!
