Planking a Small Accent Wall

DIY planking added to a small accent wall - www.goldenboysandme.com
We recently added some wall planks with hooks to a small wall in our family room and I am loving the difference it has made. Sometimes, just a small accent wall can go a long way in bringing a room up to date. This part of our family room was feeling a bit tired and dated to me and I think this little area gives it just the freshening up it needed.

The hooks make the area much more functional. It is always useful to have another space to hang things. This wall is just outside of our mudroom and at the bottom of the stairs that lead to our kitchen. We created a small shelf/ledge at the top of the planking where I can easily switch out pictures as I like to do that often.

We used leftover materials from when we planked other walls in our house. You can read more about our method of "shiplap" here. We planked up the wall to about 60 inches from the floor (including the bottom base trim) and topped that off with a painted piece of 1x8 pine. We created the ledge with a piece of 1x3 pine and then added a small piece of crown molding under that to finish it off.

Finally, here is a before and after of the same space. The black console table in the before picture found a new home in our front entryway. We recently added the new Pottery Barn console table to our family room and 2 console tables in the same room felt like overkill. I will share pictures of that soon. I am loving the change that this little project made for the whole space.DIY planking added to a small accent wall - www.goldenboysandme.com

  1. Super job, Courtney. I like the fact that you only made an accent wall of the planking. Sometimes less is more, and you nailed it (literally). Happy weekend!

  4. Courtney, if I didn't know about the new wall, I would certainly say that the console table, lamps, etc. was the perfect fix. So pretty. But, I love the new take on the space. It seems the perfect spot for everything and I just love it. Good job xxo Judy

  9. I really love how you find ways to accentuate your home with DIY. Maybe when my kids are a little bit grown up I can also do these in our home. Your DYI's post are always worth sharing to my associates from glorious essays.
