DIY Lumbar Pillow

Easy DIY lumbar pillow made from an Ikea throw rug - www.goldenboysandme.com
It's no secret that I love a good Ikea hack!  So I always have my eyes open for new ideas for using Ikea products in a unique and personal way.  Today, I am sharing a simple little project I completed recently.  I have been searching for a long lumbar pillow for our living room sofa.  Although I found many with the look I wanted, I couldn't find one with the price I wanted.  So I gave up.  However, on a recent trip to Ikea, I spotted the striped Signe throw rugs in a bin for $3.99.  One happened to be folded to look just like a lumbar pillow.  And it just happened to be the neutral stripes I had been looking for to add to our living room.  My sewing skills are definitely lacking, but I thought I could figure out a way to make it work.  I grabbed 2 rugs and added them to my cart.

I was so excited to get started that I didn't even iron out the wrinkles.  For my next pillow, I will be sure to do that first.  I simply used a large embroidery needle with some crocheting thread.  I knew I would need something more sturdy that a regular needle and thread to get through the thicker fabric.  I stitched the long side with the fabric on its back, then turned the tube of fabric inside out.  Then I stitched up one end, added some filling that I had leftover from another project, and sewed up the other side using a very simple stitch.  Because of the fringe on the end, you can't even see my unprofessional little stitches.

I am super happy with the look for the price.  And thankful for the simple sewing I learned in high school home economics.

I am planning to make another pillow for our family room.  Also, I picked up a package of coordinating check and stripe dish towels that I am planning to make some pillows for our window seat for the spring.

If you need me, I will be the one on the sofa, sewing throw pillow covers by hand while binge watching The Gilmore Girls on Netflix.  Somehow, I missed that series when it aired and I am addicted.  Any other Gilmore Girls fan out there?

  1. Love your new pillow - awesome job! I can't sew but I think this might be in the realm of my limited sewing skills! Where did you ge the other checked pillows on the sofa? Love those too!

    1. Thanks! Believe me, my sewing skills are VERY limited so anybody can make this pillow. :) The checked pillow covers are from Ikea too.

  3. I am so impressed with your skills! The pillow is adorable! No, I have never seen the Gilmore Girls but I remember my neighbor used to love that show. Recently my husband and I binge watched all 8 seasons of Entourage. We loved it and I was so sad when we reached the end. I actually slowed down our viewing to only a couple episodes a week in the end so I could savor every moment. Then the other day, we sat down and watched the Entourage movie which was made a few years after the series ended. Such a fun series/movie and I am already missing the show and their memorable characters. It's funny because it was not a show I would normally watch but my husband got me into it and I just got addicted. Now I don't have anything to watch! The only show we watch on a regular basis now is the Big Bang Theory since I finally quit the Bachelor a couple seasons ago.

    1. I am adding Entourage to my list! I love to bing watch an entire series over a few weeks. I tried to watch Gilmore Girls once before and couldn’t really get into it, but this time I started with season 2 (because I couldn’t remember what I had already watched) and I was hooked. So now when I am finished, I will go back and watch season 1. I too am trying to savor what is left. The dialogue is very witty. We are also watching the new season of House of Cards now so that is slowing down my Gilmore Girls.

  4. Courtney, what a great idea. I have made a few pillows out of dinner napkins, cheap enough price wise but for some reason they just wrinkle and look bad after awhile. The thickness of the rugs should help that and I think it looks so great on your sofa. Super idea I will have to try..Happy Wednesday..Judy

  9. Love this idea! Just learned this Christmas how to make pillows out of double thick placemats (no sewing required), easy, cheap and cute. I recently got hooked on GG...a friend suggested watching them again when I finished, you pick up so much more. Love that show! Except season 6...you can tell that's the season the original writers were not involved.
