Adirondack Winter

Red barn in winter in Keene, NY - www.goldenboysandme.com
It has been such an unusual winter this year.  Not much snow and not much cold left it all feeling a bit odd.  But still so beautiful.  The picture above is an abandoned barn on the side of a main road in Keene, NY.  It is slated to be torn down soon and it will be greatly missed.  I have read that this barn just may be the most photographed thing in the Adirondacks.

We recently spent a long weekend upstate and since there wasn't really enough snow for snow sports, we took a few car rides to keep busy.  We stopped at The Birch Store in Keene and had lunch at the Noon Mark Diner.  This area is full of many of the famous high peaks in the Adirondacks and there are always lots of hard core hikers and climbers in town.
Back in Schroon Lake, it flurried often but never really accumulated.  Except for the day we left.  We got a good 5-6 inches of snow the day we left, followed by lots of ice and rain.  It was a stressful ride home to say the least.  We were very relieved to get back to NJ safely.

We try to look on the bright side of things, so we are excited that there won't be much of a mud season this year.  Usually, when the many feet of snow melts, there are seemingly endless weeks of mud and mess so we avoid that season.  On the negative side, we barely got to snowmobile this year.
There are many local people who need to make their living from the snow in this area, those who plow snow and feed their families from the income made from tourists.  Not getting to ride a snowmobile pales in comparison to that...

I am busy this week adding lots of spring touches around our house that I will be sharing soon.  We are now so very ready for spring! How about you?

  1. I love reading your posts- we live in upstate NY and your posts give me a fresh view of things I sometimes take for granted. If you spend another day driving around, I recommend Silver Bay YMCA. It's a self-contained campus with fantastic views and a beautiful old chapel and inn- we were married there. Love your blog and your cozy decorating style!

    1. Hi Jennifer! Thanks for your recommendation of the Silver Bay YMCA. I have heard it mentioned often, but always thought it was a private campus and never thought about checking it out. Now we definitely will. You are very lucky indeed to live in such a beautiful area.

  3. You just made my day with that picture of Dax on the snowmobile! What a cutie he is in his little coat. Your son looks so handsome too! Your photography is beautiful, Courtney. I always love these peaceful posts you write when you travel upstate. Glad to hear you got home safely. We were in Killington this past weekend and skied both Saturday and Sunday. Only about half the trails were open but we still had some pretty good skiing. I am afraid that might have been the last time we go up this year. The temperatures are going to be up in the 50's next week and rainy. My husband road up on the lift with someone who has been skiing there for 30 years and he told him it was one of the worst ski seasons he's ever had up there. Figures, this was the year we bought season passes. Oh well, time to think spring! Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. I am happy to know you enjoy the pictures. My youngest son and Dax are best buddies. They are so cute together. Yes, such an odd winter. I am glad to hear you got to go skiing last weekend. When we were upstate, we heard the same thing when we were in town about it being the least snowiest winter ever. We just wonder what the future holds for winter sports in that area. I guess only time will tell. We are so ready to move on to spring.

  5. It hurts my heart to see old barns and landmarks torn down and that's all I'll say about that because it makes me cry.
I LOVE seeing Dax on the snowmobile and the photo of both of them just melts my heart, smiles and dogs...swoon! I love his buffalo check coat, do you mind sharing where you purchased it for him?

    1. Hi Susan, I agree! I hate to see that old barn torn down but it is in much worse shape from the back so I guess it is a safety hazard? It will be so sad when it is gone since it is such a well known landmark. I purchased the buffalo check coat at Petsmart just after Christmas.

  7. Just love that little red barn. Why does red always seem like the perfect color? All the pictures are so beautiful and poor little Dax. All dressed up and can't even ride on the snowmobile. Looks like Keeper is teaching him all that he has to know. That is a precious picture with your son..Happy Weekend..Judy

  9. I really enjoy your posts about your visits to upstate New York, Courtney. It has always struck me as a beautiful area in spite of never having been there. How far is it from your home in New Jersey? The scenes and quaint places you photographed speak for themselves. :D I wonder why old structures are torn down if they don't pose a problem. Such character, it makes me sad.

Dax is growing by leaps and bounds. And if possible, getting cuter everyday! Your boy, too.
