Winter Family Room Planning - Choosing A New Slipcover

As I mentioned in my last post earlier this week, we are slowly making some changes to our family room this winter.  I created this mood board to help me bring it all together.  I envision a room filled with layers of texture and pattern that feels collected over time.  So far, we added the lantern pendant light and put together the mantel decor on the stone fireplace.  Next up is a big update for our sofa.

I am so excited to update the tired Ikea sofa in our family room with a new slipcover from ComfortWorks.  My family has a deep attachment to our Ekeskog sofa from Ikea.  We bought it for the basement family room in our last house over 10 years ago.  It is still as comfortable as it was the day we bought it.  But the slipcover that is currently on it isn't actually made for this sofa so it has never fit quite right.  Ikea stopped making this sofa and slipcover many years ago and I made do with a slipcover for a similar sofa (Hovas) from there.  The Hovas is a bit larger so the slipcover has always appeared messy.

The back frame has an empty space (because the slipcover is made for a different sofa) that I have tried to fill with a variety of things (cotton batting and foam from a cushion to name a couple) but with my 3 crazy boys and dogs, it never lasted more than a couple of hours.

A couple of months back, I came across the Comfort Works website.  I was thrilled to see that they offered slipcovers for our Ekeskog.  I discussed it with my husband and we decided to order a slipcover of our own after the holidays when we had more funds to spend on home projects.  So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I was contacted by Comfort Works to review a slipcover!  We received the packet of fabric swatches last week.  They are all lovely and it was hard to choose.  I found it helpful to lay the swatches against the throw pillows that I had chosen from our mood board to narrow down the choices.

I really loved the look of the linen fabrics, but in the end durability won out, so we chose the Herringbone fabric in Ivory.  It is machine washable, can stand up to the daily wear and tear of kids & pets and seems like it will be quite comfortable too. Our new puppy, Dax, approves of our fabric choice too.  Apparently, those swatches are very cozy.

It will be so great to have a slipcover that actually fits.  Our new slipcover should be arriving soon and I can't wait!  In the meantime, we are working on a DIY ladder to hang some throws from to add even more layers of texture to the space.  Here is where we are at with that project.  It needs a few more rungs added and then some sanding and stain.

I will be sharing more updates to our family room over the next few weeks.  I hope you'll stop by to see our progress.  Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Layers and texture!!!! That is your secret recipe for the coziness you inspire me with. I'm literally writing that down and putting it in my pocket the next time I go "home" shopping. And your dogs... speechless.

  12. Love your ideas for the room. You always do such a great job at making your spaces so warm and inviting. Have you ever mentioned the rug in there? I am on a search for a family room rug and what better person to ask than someone with golden retrievers. They are looking cuter than ever by the way...
    Thanks! - Shelley

  13. Your family room is looking so great, Courtney! I love that you did a mood board. I'm not sure how to do that but my daughter has been making making them for our lakehouse and it really and truly helps.

How great to find a place to have slipcovers for your sofa. My problem with ours is the down feather fill has 'shrunk'! I need to figure out a way to fluff it up-it's no longer under warranty. And it's so smushy and looks deflated. I think it may be easier than not to figure out a solution.

Love the pic of your new pup. Did I miss a post with the name? Duh...male or female? :(

The ladder is so cool. Keep up the good work!!

    Jane xx
