If Planking Walls Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts & words about the loss of our dog, Forrest.  It has been a tough year and although many of you started visiting here for home decor posts, you have all been so supportive of our family.  I really do hope to get on with more home ideas now!

So we've been adding a couple of walls of planks to our house because apparently it is my latest addiction.  I keep telling myself that someday a nice young couple will be cursing us out as they remove all of these planks, saying to each other, "what were they thinking?" much like we did as we removed panelling and wall paper from the 70s and 80s in our 3 fixer uppers :)  But I just can't help myself.  I love planks and the character they add.  Plus, they are super affordable and a relatively easy way to update a space.

Last week, I shared the planks we added to our dining area.  We also added planks to 2 walls in the living room - the one pictured above and the front wall where the big window is.  The big shared wall in our living/dining room is still painted Behr's Castle Path.  It will be staying that way - for a while at least.  My boys staged an intervention and made me promise to leave that wall alone.

And of course adding planks means taking everything off the walls and starting fresh.  Our living room definitely needed a refresh.  I like to keep things very rustic and traditional down in our family room, but I like to have a bit more fun with this level of our house.  I switched out the bold striped drapes for these Aztec panels I found at Target.

The entryway chalkboard is wiped clean right now but it will soon have some new chalk art for the holidays.

I also took everything down from the gallery wall that goes up our stairs and re-did it, keeping some pictures and adding some new ones too.  I actually think this wall looks naked without planks.  The struggle is real. :)

While I was at it, I added some numbers to these stairs on a whim.  I actually took the time to measure out the center of the stairs.  But I apparently shifted that measurement somewhere between the 3rd & 4th stairs.  Oops!!  I need to repaint each stair back (which really needed to be done in the first place anyway) and re-do the #s but my kids have been having a good time making fun of my mistake.  They walk up the first 3 stairs on the left and then cross over to the right.  Perhaps I will just leave them.  Their imperfection has brought us more laughs than perfectly numbered stairs ever could.

And that's what we're up to around here this week.  Are you excited for holiday decor?  I am in full holiday decorating mode so I am ready to share holiday posts just after Thanksgiving.

  2. "affordable and relatively easy".... will there be a DIY post anytime soon? AND do you remember where you bought your dining room candle sconces? LOVE them :)

    1. The sconces in our dining area are from Pottery Barn. They are the Artisanal Wall Mount Candleholders. And they are on sale :)

Perhaps we should do a post on the planking? I did take pictures but then I wasn’t going to because there are already so many out there. We use a combo of a bunch of different planking tutorials I found on Pinterest. I think that will be a great post for after the holidays.

  3. First of all, you had me laughing with the title of your post. Too cute! Anyway, I love the planking and now as I am looking at my walls, they all look naked! I also think the stair numbers are fun that way. Anything that causes entertainment for boys is worth it! Enjoy your day!

In the first picture, do you have a source for the coat hook "plaque" (sorry, I can't think of a better term)? It's just what I've been looking for!

    1. Thank you! I got the coat hook rack at HomeGoods a couple of weeks back. They actually had them in white and grey too. It was about $20. Hope you can find one!!

    1. I am probably not the best influence, but I say just decorate if you want to!! When you love Christmas, the season feels too short so why not enjoy it for a couple of extra weeks? :) That being said, I have been trying to keep my curtains closed to hide our crazy from our neighbors. This year, we have 3 fully decorated trees up 2 solid weeks before Thanksgiving. We still have pumpkins outside the door, but inside it is all Christmas.

  10. Your post made me smile, Courtney! We recently tore out the sheetrock in the kitchen nook in our 1926 home to expose the original shiplap. We talked about how the original owners, who we think lived here until the 1980s, would have been so horrified to see us remove something that had been such a huge upgrade for them. Underneath the sheetrock, there was wallpaper on top of the shiplap, probably from the 1950s, which was glued to cheesecloth that had been nailed to the walls. It made us a little sad to take it off! Anyway, I guess our home trends will always change, won't they :) I love your planking, and your styling is always so inspiring! Happy holidays to your and your sweet boys, xoxo, Andrea

    1. You are so right. Our decor will always be evolving. My husband is helpful when it comes to encouraging me to just go for things. When I was stressing over all of the holes we would be putting in the sheetrock with planking, he said, that’s what spackle is for! :)

Now, your home with the original shiplap is ideal. Oh how I would love to live in an older home with all of that history!!

  14. I don't know how I have never come across you on the internet before but I LOVE your style! I found you in a search as I was trying to find homes that used "Castle Path" as their paint color! Love love love these planks!

  15. I like the gallary wall without the shiplap, it gives a nice balance.

  16. Love the planked walls. Where do I find planks and how do you put them up with nails?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is there a difference between shiplap and plank? Does stores sell planks? Is that what you would ask for? Thank you

  18. Hi Courtney, I am also wondering how you did the plank walls. Are they one continuous piece or are they stagger like an oak floor would be. I found some pine tongue and grove that would probably work for me and I was thinking about either chalk painting the or using some type of wash for a light grey. Could you let me/us know how you did the planking, type of material, nails and glue or just nails or ? when you have a chance.

Thanks, I just love all the extra, subtle touches that make your home really one of a kind.
