Our Christmas Family Room

Welcome to our rustic Christmas family room!

Our family room has a cabin/lodge feel to it all year round because of the stone fireplace.  This year, our Christmas decor also goes along with that.

I added a white slipcover to one of our plaid chairs for the holidays.  I love the plaid that is on these chairs, but it really limits the other plaids I can add to the room and this year seems to be all about the plaid!  This slipcover is so soft and warm.  It feels like a fuzzy blanket.  Just perfect to read a book by the fire.  Can you believe the buffalo check fleece throw on the back of the chair came from the dollar spot at Target?  When my friend Jenny posted a picture of her throw on Instagram, I knew I had to get to Target A.S.A.P.   Target called it a dog blanket.  I called it an affordable way to add some buffalo check to our family room :)

The rug in front of the fireplace is a new addition to this room and it is from Ikea.
Our new planked gallery wall adds so much personality to this room.  And gives the other side of the room (away from the fireplace) some interest.

As usual, red is my favorite accent color.  I added a couple of new throw pillow covers (the red and white check pillow covers are from Ikea), but the rest is stuff we use year after year.

Our little mouse in a matchbox always makes an appearance at Christmastime.

I added some plaid ribbon to our glass lamps with command strips.  Such a simple little touch that adds so much to the room.  The candles are the "Snow Currant" scent from Pottery Barn.  They are my absolute favorite smelling candles at this time of year.

I wrote a post just about our mantel that you can find here.  The sled under the tree belonged to my boys when they were little and I am saving it for our future grandchildren.  For now,  it just holds some presents.  It is from L.L. Bean.

No fancy ornaments here.  Both of our trees are filled with a mix of mismatched & meaningful ornaments.

On the wall unit, I added this wooden deer head (from Marshalls) to one of our boxwood wreaths.

My mom has an amazing collection of nutcrackers and she has started passing some of hers down to to my boys.

  1. Just beautiful, Courtney! I think I'd want to hang out in this room all day, especially during Christmas. You've reminded me that I need to get some Christmasy candles. I still have pumpkin sitting on my kitchen counter! : ) Love the plaid you've added in and it was a good idea to cover a plaid chair with the white slipcover. I guess you don't realize that plaids can clash. Great find on the blanket - I would never believe it was from the Target dollar bin, but who could complain! It makes for a great look for a low price.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. I am a bit addicted to Christmas candles :) The plaid on our chairs has more fall like colors so it can be a pain to work around. I love using slipcovers to change things up once in a while. I am so excited about those dollar section blankets. I love a bargain! Hope you are having a great week! Courtney

    1. Hi Kris,
Thanks so much! I am definitely going for cozy in here. I love that my mom is handing down her nutcrackers too. My kids enjoy them. And it gives her more room to add to her display so it’s a win-win. Courtney

    1. Thank you so much, Judy. I am loving that Ikea rug too. I like to stick with traditional colors at Christmas too. Every year, I think maybe I should change it up... but then I think that Christmas is all about traditions so there is nothing wrong with sticking with what you love.

      Have a great weekend,
      Courtney

  8. Love your old fashioned tree. I swoon over many of the theme trees but can't bare to not bring out the ornaments that we have loved for many years. My mom gave me some little glass Shiny Brights when I had my first tree. She was tired of them and they are now probably at least 50 years old. She enjoys them now on my tree. Last year I used Buffalo plaid and this year I have pulled out two Scottish plaid scarves for my tables. One is watch plaid and the other one has a medium blue background. Lovely this time of year. I love your glass cloche. Have you mentioned where you found it. It is very unusually shaped. Hope your Christmas is filled with joy.

    1. Hi Vicky,

Thank you so much! Your Shiny Bright ornaments sound so lovely! What a treasure to have from your mother. The Scottish plaid scarves sound perfect too. I think I would feel right at home in your house :) The cloche came from Crate and Barrel last year, but I saw the exact same glass domes (without the base) at TJ Maxx recently. They were only $10! So definitely try there if you have a local store. Merry Christmas! Courtney

  9. Courtney....I absolutely love your tree. We decorate ours with a mix match of ornaments too.....most all with sentimental meaning.....gifts, homemade, pictures, vacations. It means so much to all of us and we have fun telling the stories as we put them on the tree.....great memories. Your new rug from Ikea is perfect! I sure wish we lived closer to an Ikea!!! Please share the resource for your merry pillow!!!!! Happy Holidays!!!!

    1. Happy Holidays to you and your family too, Andrea! Thanks you, as always, for your sweet words about our home. I am loving the new rug from Ikea. I am pretty sure it is available to order online. I bought the "merry" pillow at Marshalls. I also purchased one that says "peace" and that one is up in my living room. Hope you can find one!

  13. Love the Christmas room from 2014. Looks like the garland on the mantel is on a rod of some sort. Will you share how you did that?
    Thanks in advance.
