The Painted Hutch

Painting the large farm style hutch has been on my to-do list for years.  I was definitely afraid to pull the trigger pick up the paint brush.  We originally purchased the hutch for the kitchen in our last house. When we moved here, it was the first piece of furniture that made this 1980's decorated house feel like home.  We placed it in the dining room.  The dining room with the vertical blinds and mirrored chandelier.  I saw hope while everyone around us was saying, "Why would they sell their completely remodeled house to move here?"  So, these were the thoughts running through my head as I fearfully put the first coat of paint on this sentimental piece.

Here's a quick peek of the before.  I had a heck of a time finding a picture of the green hutch on my computer.  I obviously avoided photographing it!  The dark brown leather chair has also since found a new home in my son's bedroom.  And the brown leather ottoman too.
I still love the style of the hutch, but the dark green color was the problem.  This level of our house is light and airy and the dark hutch wasn't working for us anymore.  We used DecoArt chalky finish paint and it turned out to be a really easy project.  We decided to leave the back of the shelves in the original pine finish.  I like how it mimics the finishes on our center Ikea Hack island.

The new color definitely makes the whole space feel bigger.  I think the green hutch had a way of catching your eye and breaking up the whole room.  It feels like a much more cohesive space now.

Have you ever been afraid to paint something?  I was so happy with how this turned out that I bought more chalky paint to paint over the clock that used to be in the corner of our dining room.  I say "used to be" because the painting didn't go so well with that one.  I'll tell you more about that in another post... Aaah the ups and downs of real life DIY!

  2. Beautiful -such a pretty piece, and the wood ties in so well with the fireplace wood. So warm and fresh and bright all at once!

    1. Thanks, Krista! Yes, it ties in with the fireplace wood, too :) Don't know why I waited so long to paint it.
