DIY Stair Runner

My boys run around the house like maniacs.  They fly down the many stairways that make up our split level.  I am always worried that someone is going to break their neck.  Especially down the wide stairs that lead to our entryway and family room.  Since we removed the wall to wall carpet and refinished the treads, it has been slippery.  We decided to add a runner, DIY style...of course.

Our foyer floor is tile so I knew I wanted the runner to coordinate with the tile as well as the wood.  I also wanted a runner that would add a little bit of personality to the stairway.

I purchased 2 runners at Christmas Tree Shop for $14.99 each.  That was enough to cover our 5 stairs.  It is an indoor/outdoor rug so hopefully it will hold up to our crazy house.

We attached the runner simply with staples.  I should note that our stair treads are not brand new so there were already small holes in the treads where the old carpet was attached.  These holes aren't noticeable since we sanded and stained the stairs, but someone who is a perfectionist might be bothered by them.  I am a realist living in a house with 3 growing boys and 2 big dogs, so adding a few small holes from the staples doesn't bother me at all.  We added staples every 2 inches.

Please excuse the bad picture I snapped quickly with my phone.  Sheesh, I really need to  get better about taking "during" pictures.  We used clamps to hold the carpet in place as we stapled.  It took us less than a 1/2 hour to install the runner.  We made sure to have the finished edge under the first step and at the bottom of the bottom step's riser.  We joined the two runners underneath one of the treads.

The project was fast, easy and affordable and I am glad we finally got around to getting it done.

  1. Looks great and I've always wondered why people leave stairs without something to keep people/kids/dogs from falling!

    1. Hi Kelly. So glad to hear you found some inspiration here on my blog :) Good luck with your coffee table. That was such a fun project and I still love it a year later. The 3 baskets are from HomeGoods a couple of years back. I have seen similar baskets on occasion there recently. The boat is from Christmas Tree Shops.
