Our {Latest} Kitchen Makeover Reveal

DIY mantel hood over kenmore pro 30" range-www.goldenboysandme.com
Let me start by saying that I love kitchens.  Our kitchen is my favorite room in the house.  Buying a new dish towel or utensil can make my day.  I am just trying to explain why we felt the need to makeover a fairly new kitchen.  That we remodeled ourselves a few shirt years ago!  The range that was in here was a budget choice purchased when we moved in 7 years ago that we planned on replacing.  We have been in the market for a dual fuel professional style range.  We looked at Viking and Thermador.  Drooled over the beloved Wolf with its iconic red knobs.  And eventually stumbled upon the Kenmore Pro and we were smitten.  First, the price was less than 1/2 that of the others we were considering.  Huge plus! But I also loved the look.  I have been cooking on this range for two weeks now and it is as wonderful as I hoped so far...
We knew that with a more powerful range, we would also need a stronger exhaust fan.  The microwave/fan combo just wouldn't cut it.  So we removed our microwave and purchased a countertop microwave that we placed on a shelf.  I printed out lots of pictures from Pinterest and Billy got to work figuring out how he could DIY a mantel/hood combo.  I am seriously impressed with his mad skills!   Billy is going to be joining me in writing posts on here very soon.

We also changed the backsplash from tumbled marble to white subways and added the pot filler.  We were able to add the pot filler because we have an unfinished basement beneath this space and we can easily access our plumbing.  Plus, some most of the drywall came off with the old backsplash so we had a big hole in the wall anyway.  The pot filler has proven to be more useful than I thought (confession: I really thought we were buying it because it would look cool).  We relocated our coffee pot to where the pot filler can reach it and that has been very convenient.  Here is what it looked like a few short weeks ago:

I think the subway tile makes the kitchen feel cleaner and brighter and removing the microwave from above the range definitely gives the illusion of more space.

We removed the appliance garage and the open shelved cabinet in order to make room for these shelves to get the microwave off the counter.  This area always felt really tight to me with the appliance garage.  Also, since we added the open shelved Ikea bookshelf "island", we now keep our toaster there.

We also changed the trim around the window to the same style trim we have been using throughout the house.  I am always amazed at the difference this trim makes!

  8. Just found your blog and your home is amazing! I, too, would really like to see the tutorial on your range hood mantel as we are going to be remodeling our kitchen soon and I want to do the same. Is it just a board flat under the cabinets for the shelf, then a curved piece with two brackets attached to that? How is the hood attached? And did you paint your cabinets so you already had the paint or did you have to try to match it?

  9. Love love love you kitchen. And love the triple windows above the sink. I noticed that the sink is not centered beneath the windows which I always should be, but its doesn't seem to matter. You really don't even notice. Did it ever bother you?
